READY, SET, GO!

Before you begin your publishing project it is important to learn about each of the 7 stages of the publishing process as well as all your publishing and distribution options.

THE LEARNING PROCESS

The Learning Process

You will often hear me describing the publishing process like driving a car and the reason is there are so many similarities between the two experiences.

You must learn to drive a car (eg. get a licence), plan the trip (eg. get a map or these days a GPS), budget for the journey (eg. put fuel in your car), create the journey (eg. put your learning, planning and budgeting into practive by pulling out of the drive way) and when you begin to cruise (eg. get into top gear) you can really enjoy the experience.

The last step of drving a car is really simple... repeat the process. You have to renew your licence, get up to date maps and put fuel in your car on a regular basis or you won't be able to drive. By repeating the process time and time again you find you spend more time cruising on the highway and less time learning, planning or budgeting but you had to start somewhere.

The same is true about the publishing process so read on to ensure you know exactly what needs to be done in order to esnure a safe trip down the publishing highway.

BEFORE YOU START
Learn

Just like you need a certain amount of knowledge to successfully drive a car you need equally as much knowledge to successfully publish a book. Now publishing a book is not hard once you know what you are doing but there is a highway of major accidents out there waiting for you if you don't learn how to navigate your way around them first.

Plan

Now anyone knows you can get in a car and quiet easily drive without a map however if you are going to a place you have never been to before it would be unwise to do so as you wouldn't be able to ensure you would make it to your destination if you had no idea how to get there. The same is true when it comes to publishing a book, if you have a plan before you start, with all the steps clearly marked out for you you will have no doubts of how you will get to your destination and can even accurately estimate your time of arrival.

Budget

Just like any good drive though a publishing project does need fuel to make it go but what happens if your budget for whatever reason doesn't match your plan. There are costs involved with any publishing project but what you need to think about is not only what those costs are but who is going to pay them. Do you have the finances to fund your publishing dream or would you prefer your potential customers to pay your set up costs so you can begin making money from your book straight away. Either way you need to know the costs involved so you must have a budget to accompany your plan.

THE PUBLISHING PROCESS
Create

Create is the fun part where you take what you have learnt, planned and budgeted and make it all happen. There are 7 stages in the publishing process and all 7 fit within the create stage of the learning process. Whether you are doing every stage yourself of paying someone else to it is important you understand how each stage works before you begin.

AFTER YOU FINISH

Cruise

Once your book is finished people think the hard work is done but this couldn't be further from the truth. Your baby is born but it doesn't have a life of its own yet and it is totally dependant on you its parent to look after it. How do you plan to distribute your book? Which distribution methods are right for you and your book and do they line up to the reasons you wanted to publish a book in the first place?

KEEP THE PROCESS GOING
Repeat

So your cruising down the highway and enjoying the drive. Your book has been successfully published and distributed but how can you make sure it stays that way? Do you want to repeat the process and bring out a second book or the same book in a second format? What are you going to do to keep your target market interested and get them to purchase from and recommend you time and time again?
